“Women are more resilient and when the sky has fallen, they think about how to deal with it instead of going underground.”
There are two ways to deal with any adversity one is “Can I overcome it” and the second is “I will overcome it”
And the woman we are talking about here chose the second option and overcame her low days of life.
Here is a story of one such visionary, “Mira Kulkarni”, the founder of luxury ayurvedic brand “Forest Essentials.”
Early Life and Challenges
Mira’s early life was difficult. She got married at the age of 20, and later she went back to her parents’ home with her two daughters after a divorce. At 28, she lost both her parents. Everything seemed to fall apart at once, yet she did not stop living or dreaming.
These hardships shaped her resilience and determination, qualities that would later define her journey as one of the most inspiring female entrepreneurs in India.
How Forest Essentials Started
People say there is no right age to begin something new. Mira proved that completely. She started Forest Essentials in the year 2000 when she was 45 years old. Many people at that age slow down or look for peace, but she started a business with no business background and funding. She started Forest Essentials with just Rs. 2 Lakhs and 2 employees.
It began as a small passion project. She made handmade soaps and candles using coconut oil, almond oil and ghee. Today Forest Essentials has grown into a billion dollar company with more than 1300 employees and more than 140 products ranging from 24 carat gold infused facial creams to sheet masks to ayurvedic shampoos to de-stress oils and also a range of skincare just for men.
Seeing a Gap in the market
Back then, natural beauty products either felt too cheap or were mass produced. Mira saw the gap and thought why can’t ayurvedic products also be luxurious. She did not just sell the product in fact she sold an experience.
Later, she was known to be a woman who turned her love for natural wellness into a global phenomenon.
Challenge in Sourcing Pure Ayurvedic Ingredients
The beauty market was full of synthetic items and people were used to them. Convincing customers to use pure and traditional formulations was not easy. Even sourcing good raw material was a struggle. In a country known for Ayurveda, she found that many ingredients were adulterated. Cheaper, low quality material was everywhere because it reduced production cost.
Mira refused to compromise. She believed the ingredients should be so pure that someone could almost eat them. So instead of buying ingredients, she created them in-house. She built a system where sourcing and manufacturing both happened within her own ecosystem. From sourcing the raw materials to manufacturing the final product everything happened in -house.
Building a Prestige Brand
Today, Forest Essentials is not seen in supermarkets or department stores. They do not run on franchise model. They run their own stores. It is more of an offline brand with company-owned stores across India, making it the first Indian brand to reach the prestige category.
Women Empowerment & Building a Community
Her work did not stop at making products. She built an entire community around the brand. Since most ingredients were grown and produced locally, she started schools, encouraged women to work and supported the people living around the production units.
During that time many women in villages were not allowed to step out for work. Mira convinced the village head and slowly brought women into her business. For the first time, they earned their own money and held their own passbooks. It gave them freedom and confidence that they never had before.
The First Big Break
She saw many Indians were buying luxury soaps from abroad and she believed India could make high quality natural soaps locally as India is a home to Ayurveda. Initially her business was slow and even she was not sure whether she could make a business out of her passion.
Her major turning point was when Hyatt Regency (Delhi) placed a bulk order for their soaps giving credibility and volume.
Today they supply to many luxury hotels and spas like The Taj , Oberoi etc.) which helps reinforce their premium positioning.
Staying True to Values
Her credibility was her NOT compromising on quality. She did not compromise on the quality of her ingredients to reduce her cost of production. She had a home in Rishikesh and it being home to Ayurveda she built a business and her brand today ‘Forest Essentials “is synonymous with luxury Ayurveda.
The blend of ancient wisdom with luxury appeal had stuck a cord with the customers. Each product was handmade, cruelty free and contained no harmful chemicals. This is something that defines Forest essentials till today.
Global Expansion
In 2008, a major moment changed the brand’s future. Global luxury company Estee Lauder bought a 20% stake in Forest Essentials. This partnership helped the brand grow in other countries with better marketing and easy availability.
Legacy
Today, Forest Essentials is not just a skincare brand. It shows and reflects the beauty of India’s old and forgotten Ayurvedic knowledge and culture.
Mira Kulkarni’s story teaches us a very important lesson. She started late and started small, but she never gave up upon her dreams. She always focused on good quality and being honest to her roots. Because of this, Forest Essentials hereby became a trusted luxury Ayurvedic brand which is loved by many people today.
